Both teams had a mixture of experience and youth. United started with Combe, Partridge, Hannah, McCracken, Wright, Thompson and former Rangers player Stephen Carson. Likewise, Rangers fielded first team squad members Wilson, Latapy, Mols and former Tangerine star Billy Dodds. Young Stephen O'Donnell made his Under-21 debut following excellent performances for the Youth team. Manager Alex Smith had stated that places would be available for the first team against Livingston this coming Saturday. If that wasn't enough incentive, the Young Tangerines had an opportunity to revenge their 3-4 defeat last week against the Ibrox side.
Both teams started well with Stephen Carson looking eager to impress his former club. Winters almost put United ahead in 20 minutes but his shot is blocked for a corner. Mols missed an open goal from a Dodds pass in 25 minutes. However, two minutes later Latapy opened the scoring for Rangers.
A minute before half time, Carson (pictured above) sidefooted home a Winters cross to equalise. Half-time 1-1.
Carson brought out a save from McGregor on the hour, however, with fifteen minutes remaining, McLean scored from a Dodds assist to put the visitors ahead once again. This turned out to be the winner and Rangers had beaten United twice within eight days.
