The United Under-18’s defeated Kilmarnock at North End
Park this afternoon. Coach Paul Hegarty was more than happy with the performance. “This was the best we have played for about a month. We won the game very convincingly creating a lot of chances.”
United went ahead in 18 minutes with a good through ball from the defence to Graeme Holmes who passed to DANNY OGUNMADE who scored from 12 yards. Minutes before the break, John Shine should have made it two for United with a header that just went wide of the post.
On 55 minutes, STEPHEN McGOWAN (top left) who had played well for the Under-21’s at Ibrox on Monday, scored a tap in from a short corner taken by Danny Ogunmade to O’Donnell who crossed for the ball to be knocked into the net from a yard.
The visitors responded with a good goal into the top left corner and United had to weather some heavy Killie pressure before clinching the match with five minutes left. Michael Lau pressurised the keeper and the ball arrived at the feet of STEPHEN O’DONNELL who chipped into the net from 25 yards.
“It was a good result against a big strong Kilmarnock team,” commented Paul. “It was especially pleasing after last week’s 1-6 defeat in the Youth Cup to Aberdeen. The players did extremely well and showed a lot of character.”
