United's players left the Tannadice pitch tonight to a standing ovation from the fans as a 3-2 victory over St. Johnstone takes the Club through to the CIS Cup quarter finals.
Twice behind, it was a match they battled to rescue and their efforts were rewarded with a stunning ninetieth minute strike from Jim Hamilton which took the tie into extra time. Seven minutes later it was Hamilton who set up Jim Paterson to give United the lead for the first time in the match and the 3-2 margin was held until the final whistle. It was a result which could so easily have gone the other way and the outcome fascinated United boss Alex Smith.
"This game never fails to amaze me. It was a real derby. In the first half St. Johnstone played really well and scored an excellent goal. In extra time we started to play the ball about a bit better and got the deserved goal. That's three games on the trot we've won now."
