The young Tangerines put up a good fight before going down to a Hibs side brimming with first team experience at Hibs’ wind-swept training ground this afternoon.
Despite facing the elements, the home side almost totally dominated the first half and United had goalkeeper Josh Donaldson to thank for making a couple of fine saves in the opening 18 minutes.
But it was the visitors who almost took the lead on 20 minutes when Logan Chalmers broke clear but wasted the opportunity by blazing his shot well over.
An Ollie Shaw effort grazed the outside of the post as Hibs continued to press.
And Donaldson was beaten after 36 minutes when Sean Mackie’s long ball found Lewis Allan who finished with an acute angled shot into the far corner.
The United keeper made fine saves from Shaw and Gael Bigirimana but the second half proved to be more even.
Indeed, substitute Scott Banks came very close to levelling with a long-range effort that whizzed inches past.
But Hibs sealed victory with a second eight minutes from time.
Donaldson was adjudged to have held on to the ball too long and from the indirect free-kick, Innes Murray slipped the ball to Shaw who drilled home to seal the Reserves first defeat of 2019.
