Reserves League Cup: United 3 St Mirren 2

13th November 2018

An entertaining game saw the young Terrors come out on top in the Reserve League Cup Group A tie versus St Mirren at St Andrews this afternoon. The win put United on to six points, level with both St Johnstone and Hamilton Reserves, but sadly two goals short of qualification.

It was a deserved victory for Craig Easton’s United team and the scoreline should have been more emphatic in favour of the Terrors who passed up a barrel of chances in the second half.

The match, however, got off to a nervous start and the visitors took the lead on eight minutes, Jordan Kirkpatrick finishing beyond Fraser Currid, as United defended into the low sun during the first half. Ten minutes later, United levelled through Luc Bollan, rising to meet a corner and bulleting a header into the net. Matty Smith went close on twenty five minutes with an effort that shaved the top of the bar. Ten minutes before half time, the home side went in front. St Mirren failed to clear a Yannick Loemba corner before it was sliced into the defender's own net. Into the second half, United pushed further ahead on the hour mark, Jamie Robson’s dangerous ball across goal was turned in by Louis Appere. United missed chances to go further ahead before St Mirren gave themselves some hope in the game with fifteen minutes to go. Jordan Kirkpatrick grabbed his second of the game, finishing low beyond Currid. United, though, continued to dominate and were unfortunate not to grab some more goals before the final whistle.
