The Club is delighted to host the local Cancer Support Network CANDU at Saturday’s match versus Partick Thistle. The United squad will warm up in CANDU T-shirts to help raise awareness of this new patient-led charity and supporters can pick up information leaflets and speak with CANDU volunteers in the concourses pre-match.
The charity came into life when a group of inspirational friends from Dundee, who have all been affected by cancer, got together to support others affected by the disease in the local area. They founded CANDU to make sure that the patient voice and life experience is placed right at the heart of decision making about cancer care, all the way from diagnosis, through treatment, to recovery and, when needed, during of end-of-life care.
The group promotes awareness of existing support services and works closely with network partners (including NHS Tayside, Macmillan Cancer Support, The Scottish Cancer Prevention Network, Maggie’s Dundee and the Scottish Health Council) to develop new projects and activities which encourage compassionate and caring approaches within cancer support.
CANDU are also proud of their strong community-based outreach projects which are designed to meet the practical, physical and emotional needs of local cancer patients and their families, particularly reaching out to minority ethnic communities and people experiencing disadvantage, who may experience cultural, financial or social barriers to accessing existing services.
This summer, at the Maggie’s Centre, the group will deliver a series of creative wellbeing workshops for people affected by cancer. CANDU are always delighted to welcome fellow cancer patients and survivors to join them in their activities. CANDU operates on a voluntary basis and relies entirely on fundraising and donations to carry out its work.
Dundee United Community Trust Head of Operations Jamie Kirk said: “Cancer impacts the lives of so many and that is why this type of grassroots support is really invaluable to the local community. I’m proud that the United Family is in a position to support CANDU and I’d encourage everyone to go and grab a chat with the volunteers at the game, or better yet donate what you can to a really worthy cause.”
