Help Tiny Tangerines Bag New Equipment From Tesco

15th December 2017

Dundee United Community Trust (DUCT) is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative in aid of their Tiny Tangerines Pre-School football project.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £4,000, up to £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects. greenspace Scotland is working with Groundwork to provide support to communities in Scotland.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

DUCT is one of the groups on the shortlist.

DUCT delivers a wide range of activities and projects for the whole community under four key pillars:  sport, health and wellbeing, education and inclusion.  Our sports activities provide boys, girls, men and women the chance to take part in physical activity from the age of 2-92 regardless of their level of ability.  We engage around 500 people each week across all of our activities and this funding would help us provide essential upgraded equipment for our projects.  Our Tiny Tangerines urgently require new specialist equipment to make their activities as engaging and fun as possible.

Jamie Kirk, Head of Operations for DUCT, had this to say “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for the Tesco Bags of Help scheme.  As a registered charity we rely heavily on grant funding and donations and this money would make such a difference to the participants.  If successful, we will be able to buy new equipment specifically for our Tiny Tangerines Pre-School football project.  You can really help us to make a difference in the local community and give kids the best start in life by voting for us”.

You can vote for DUCT throughout January and February in the following stores:

6145  DUNDEE HAWKHILL EXP      DD1 1NJ

2389  Dundee Kingsway                DD3 8QB

2405  DUNDEE METRO                  DD1 2BB

6708  DUNDEE NETHERGATE EXP   DD1 4ER

2429  Dundee Riverside                 DD2 1UG

5745  Dundee South Road              DD2 4SR

Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £40 million to 9,700 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Tony McElroy, Tesco’s Head of Communications in Scotland, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for January and February. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.”

Emma Halliday, Community Enabler Coordinator at greenspace Scotland, said:

“We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between.

“We’re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life.”

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp.
