The Young Terrors were defeated 4-1 at Airdrie tonight, but the margin flattered the hosts.
Thistle almost took the lead after 15 minutes when Callum Wilson’s near post header flashed just past.
Two minutes later, the Tangerines were unlucky not to go ahead when Archie Thomas crashed a 20-yarder against the base of the post and the rebound almost went in, off the keeper Jamie Sneddon who just managed to keep it out.
But it was the Jags who took the lead on 31 minutes and it was in fortunate circumstances.
From a soft penalty award Neil McLaughlin hit the post and fortunately it for him it struck Josh Donaldson enabling him to net the rebound.
Early in the second half, United twice came close to levelling.
First Jags keeper Jamie Sneddon did well to hold on to a 20-yard drive from Dom Mcmeekin and then Matty Smith headed wide when well placed.
Having dominated the second period, United fell further behind when Thistle hit them on te break, McLaughlin stroking home from 12 yards after 69 minutes.
Two minutes later, United’s efforts were rewarded when Matty Smith prodded home a Louis Appere cross from close range.
But on 76 minutes, Jamie Stokes extended Thistle’s lead and with five minutes left Callum Wilson converted the hosts’ second penalty award.
