The home side were first to threaten after ten minutes, United keeper Brett Long saving well from Ross Cunningham.
But a minute later, the Tangerines took the lead.
Gav Ritchie made ground down the right and fired in a low cross which was turned in by Logan Davie from close range.
Long was again in action to keep out an Eamonn Brophy effort after 12 minutes.
However, there was nothing the United keeper could do to keep out Ryan Tierney’s low drive from the edge of the box six minutes later.
And on 32 minutes, United went behind when Cunningham cracked a free-kick up and over the wall from 20 yards.
United came close to levelling a minute later when an angled shot from Harvey Dailly drifted narrowly past the far post.
Though they dominated the second half, Accies only had a late second strike by Cunningham to add to their total.
