Charlie Miller could be set for a first pre-season appearance in midweek when United head in against Dutch First Division club Helmond Sports. The former Rangers midfielder has been attempting to 'swim' his way back to full fitness in the hotel pool at United's headquarters at the Dutch National Sports Centre near Arnhem. A niggling knee injury has hampered Miller's build-up to the new campaign, and boss Alex Smith admitted yesterday that Charlie was his major doubt for the city derby opener against Dundee on Saturday week. "However, I am now confident that he will be ready in time for the SPL opener".
Miller may play in the Wednesday friendly in Helmond, while Jamie Buchan is another who could get his first start since undergoing close-season surgery on a troublesome ankle knock. Steven Thompson and Jim Hamilton may also make it after taking knocks at the weekend. But David McCracken seems certain to sit this one out after suffering a groin injury in Sunday's win in Dordrecht.
