The Young Terrors returned to winning ways with a convincing 3 - 1 win over their Inverness CT counterparts at St Andrews today.
Taking control from the first whistle, the young Tangerines almost took the lead on 11 minutes when Graham Taylor diverted a Scott Allardice drive inches past.
Four minutes later, United had a good shout for a penalty rejected when Ali Coote was brought down in the box.
However, five minutes later, Harvey Daily was sent tumbling under Cameron Gilchrist’s challenge and Coote converted from the spot.
Having hardly been seen as an attacking force, Caley Thistle almost levelled just after the half-hour mark but Stephen Rennie’s free-kick from just outside the box was acrobatically tipped over by United keeper Brett Long.
However the visitors did equalise seven minutes from the interval in the most bizarre fashion. Long slipped as he tried to clear a back-pass and the ball hit him in his own face and fell to Andrew Macrae who stroked the ball into the empty net.
Justice was served, however, when United regained the lead five minutes later, Coote cottoning on to a Gav Ritchie pass to round the keeper and knock the ball into the empty net.
After the break, the Highlanders got a foothold in the game and just after the hour mark Sam Robertson ballooned the ball over the bar with the goal at his apparent mercy.
Regaining control, only a terrific Stephen Foster save prevented Dom Mcmeekin’s angled drive extending United's lead.
And minute, later they did courtesy of an Ali Stark own goal as he blasted an attempted clearance of Jordan Hornby’s powerful low-driven cross into the net.
