CLOSED-DOOR MATCH HELPS DECIDE TOUR PARTY

9th July 2001

United's first match involvement of the new season goes ahead this midweek, with a closed-door affair having been pencilled in for Wednesday. The occasion will help boss Alex Smith decide his travelling squad for next week's three-match trip to Holland.

A slight knee problem may keep Charlie Miller out of the midweek friendly, but there are no concerns as to the Scotland cap's participation in the Netherlands. Said Smith, "Charlie has picked up a niggling knee injury due to the hard ground but it's nothing to worry about. He'll be travelling to Holland, as will Danny Griffin who's now back in training after being granted an extended break. Generally, pre-season training has been going well and everybody is starting to get a feel for the campaign ahead. After our closed-door game on Wednesday, we hope to set up a full-scale practice match the following day, to keep us all in tune for the trip overseas."

Comeback men Jim Paterson and Jamie Fullarton will be in the travelling party at the weekend, with another player on his way back to full fitness, Stephen Wright, in with a shout of making the squad.
