Dundee United Women’s Football Club yesterday collected the SWFL2 East League trophy after finishing the season in style with another strong home victory at the GA Arena yesterday.
Club Captain Sean Dillon and Club Ambassador Hamish McAlpine were on-hand to present the trophy to the excited playing squad after the match.
During their first league campaign, the team won every competitive league game and now have another trophy to put alongside the SWFL2 (Scottish Women’s Football League Division 2) Cup that was secured earlier in the season.
Head Coach, Gavin Beith said: “I’m delighted that we have secured the League and Cup double. All players, coaches and committee members have worked so hard to make this happen. The commitment shown from all has been outstanding. This season has given the Club a great foundation to build upon. Our aim is to plan now for next season and SWFL Division 1.”
Justine Mitchell, Chair of DUWFC, said: “I want to thank everyone involved at DUWFC, from the players, the Coaches and Lorna Moffat, our Club Secretary, who have all worked very hard to make this happen.
"Huge thanks also have to go to our Sponsors who helped to make this happen. DUWFC is self-sufficient, and this sponsorship assisted us to buy our kit. Thank you to Dr. Noodles, ArabTrust, DUDA, and Paint-tech. Last but not least, a massive thank you to everyone who has backed the team this season. DUWFC appreciates your support.
"It has been a joy to get to know the girls and see them grow as players."
Also, DUWFC has been in discussions with other Clubs intending to create partnerships to develop and promote girls and women’s football in the area. DUWFC believe building with local grassroots clubs in the area is the best way to support the growth of the game.
These partnerships will provide a structured development model for everyone involved which in turn will create a “win-win” situation for clubs, coaches and most importantly the players.
As part of DUWFC’s desire to build and promote women’s football in Dundee they are now setting up a Development Team with trials due to take place in November. The Development Team will play in the SWFL2 East League.
Justine said “We firmly believe that a Football Club should be at the heart of the community and vice versa. We are at a very exciting chapter in women’s football with the sport growing so fast. We have the National Team having qualified for the Women’s Euros 2017 for the first time and Glasgow City and Hibernian Ladies playing in the Champions League. It is a superb time to be part of this.”
Promotion means that when they line up in SWFL League 1 next season, DUWFC will be only one step away from the desired aim of the Scottish Women’s Premier League.
