‘ESCAPE CLAUSE’ FOR CHARLIE STRONGLY DENIED

27th June 2001

United boss Alex Smith has slammed suggestions that midfield star Charlie Miller is heading south again. Kevin Keegan's Manchester City had been reported to be poised to take advantage of a supposed get-out clause in the Miller's Tannadice contract. United's spokesman said: "There's not a grain of truth in it. There is no such clause in Charlie's contract. To claim otherwise is downright dishonest and hugely unfair." Alex Smith was also quick to rubbish the claim--and post a 'hands-off' warning to all Miller admirers. Said the Manager, "The story was absolute garbage. I can assure Dundee United fans that there are no hidden agendas in Charlie's contract. "Charlie Miller is going nowhere. He has still got a lot to do here at Tannadice which will be of benefit to the Club. And when that work is completed, it will be Dundee United who will benefit". He added, "It must be remembered he was becoming something of a forgotten man down south before we stepped in to bring him to Tannadice." Miller was of course lured north of the border from Watford midway through last season and played a major role in the Tangerines edging clear of the SPL's relegation zone. Since then he has performed so well that he has been given international recognition by Scotland Manager Craig Brown.
