Dev League: Hamilton Accies 2 Dundee United 1

19th April 2016

Two Ross Cunningham goals consigned the Tangerines  to a 2 - 1 defeat at New Douglas Park today. By Peter Rundo Cunningham scored twice in the second half before United pulled one back late on. Accies started brightly and only a last gasp tackle by Cammy Ballantyne prevented United going behind after three minutes. But the visitors almost took the lead from their first corner after ten minutes when Harry Souttar’s header was well saved by the keeper. Only a smart save by Luis Zwick on his return from injury five minutes later prevented Ryan Tierney from putting the hosts ahead. It was end to end stuff and on 27 minutes Ali Coote cut in and cracked a shot just past and two minutes later Ross Cunningham did likewise at the other end. During the ten minutes leading up to the interval, the visitors produced a raft of scoring chances. The best came on 39 minutes when Flo Sinama Pongolle controlled a Logan Davie cross before hooking in a shot which Accies keeper Alan Martin did well to block. However, six minutes after the restart, it was Hamiton who took the lead, Cunningham steering the ball into the far corner from 15 yards. Accies' advantage was doubled on 72 minutes with a well worked goal that saw Steven Boyd find Tierney who squared for Cunningham to fire home from close range. With eight minutes left, Brad Smith pulled one back with a first time volley from just outside the box. Accies almost paid the price for squandering two late gilt-edged chances because only a terrific save from substitute Dom McMeechan prevented a United equaliser.
