The only surprise at at the end of this game was that it finished goalless with both keepers making a handful of great saves in a game which produced chances galore.
That was despite a bumpy pitch and there is no doubt that United played the better football and had the greater number of chances.
Having said that Saints made the better start with a Kyle Lander header clipping the bar after seven minutes, but it was United who then took a grip on proceedings.
Twice Ali Coote went close with home keeper Jordan Millar making a fine stop and then saw a shot deflected over.
Just before the break Harry Souttar had an effort cleared off the line.
Though United continued to dominate at the start of the second half, it was Saints who almost went ahead after 54 minutes.
Indeed, only a brilliant double save by Joe McGovern in the visiting goal kept out a looping header from Jason Kerr and the follow up shot from Liam Caddis.
Ten minutes later, only equally as fine a Millar save kept out Justin Johnson’s pile-driver from 12 yards.
And with 13 minutes left McGovern blocked a shot from Saints’ skipper Alex Kitchen, whilst Johnson was again denied by Millar at the other end with Jamie Montgomery also going close.
