Two second half goals earned Dundee United a fully merited win over Inverness Caley Thistle at Station Park, Forfar, this afternoon. By Peter Rundo
As the teams came to terms with the windy conditions, the first half was almost devoid of goal attempts.
Of the few that there were, the best came from Ali Coote with a shot that the keeper did well to hold after 36 minutes.
In complete contrast to what had gone before, the Tangerines started the second half with real menace.
Newcomer Justin Johnston was only denied by a clearance off the line six minutes after the restart.
But a goal was only delayed by two minutes, Matti Smith meeting a Jamie Robson pass to score with a neat finish from ten yards.
Robson then went close with a good effort, only for United to temporarily fall out of the game.
Indeed, keeper Luis Zwick was called into action for the first time, making a good save from Liam Polworth.
Two minutes Alasdair Sutherland volleyed just past, but from then on the Tannadice team dominated.
And they doubled their lead five minutes from the end when substitute Aaron Duke headed home an Ali Coote free-kick.
Dundee United: Zwick, Spark, Robson, S Smith, Ballantyne, McLaughlin, Johnston (Duke 83), B Smith, M Smith, Montgomery, Coote. Subs not used: Booth, Duke, McNaughton, Horne.
