United started well with Scott Smith prominent, sending an early effort just wide before firing in a free-kick which Hearts keeper Jack Hamilton held.
But Hamilton could only block a Scott Smith shot after 14 minutes.
Hearts then went close shortly afterwards with a header which went just past, but did make the breakthrough after 14 minutes.
Osman Sow collected Joe McGovern’s kick-out and knocked the ball into the feet of Soufain El Hassnoui.
The second half was a story of chances at both ends, but neither side managing to test the keeper.
The visitors went close right on the restart, substitute Ian Smith firing just past.
At the other end, Jamie Montgomery did likewise at the other end after 66 minutes, but a minute later Gary Oliver went through but prodded inches past.
With quarter of an hour left, Brad Smith knocked a free-kick inches wide.
And twice before the end, Montgomery went close to getting a deserved equaliser.
