Included in the United ranks were striker Mario Bilate and defender John Souttar both returning after lengthy lay-offs through injury.
In what was a rather scrappy affair because of the difficult conditions; Hamilton did have the ball in the net after 27 minutes only for Eamonn Brophy’s strike to be ruled offside.
Five minutes later, United took the lead when Aaron Connolly fired home a free-kick low into the bottom corner from just outside the box.
Before the interval, visiting keeper Blair Currie denied both Bliate and Connolly.
Taking advantage of the elements, Hamilton had the better chances after the break, but when a goal did come it was at the other end.
Twelve minutes remained when Harry Souttar headed home a Chris McLaughlin corner and a couple of minutes later, Connolly almost added a third, hitting the post after having rounded the keeper.
