SFA Youth Cup: Dundee United 4 Formartine United 0

2nd November 2014

The Tangerines strolled into the fourth round of the SFA Youth Cup with a comprehensive victory over the Highland League outfit at Glebe Park this afternoon. Chris McLaughlin was the star of the show, supplying the ammunition for the first three goals and converting the fourth from a penalty. The opener came in the ninth minute when Rafa Malaga swept home his low cross from the left. Five minutes later, Aaron Duke was on the end of another cross from the left to power home a header. And midway through the half, Harry Souttar headed home his corner from the right. Malaga did have the ball in the net shortly afterwards, but was ruled offside. With United so much on top, Coach Stevie Campbell took the opportunity of making three substitutions. However, despite being equally dominant after the break, there was only one further goal. That came with 14 minutes left when Reghan Tumilty was brought down in the box and fittingly McLaughlin slammed home the spot-kick. The Tannadice side had to play out the last six minutes with ten men, Matty Smith being forced to limp off with all three subs already committed.   Dundee United: Booth, Ballantyne, McLaughlin, B Smith (Horne 46), H Smith, Harwood (Robson 46), Tumilty, Lochhead (McNaughton 46), M Smith, Duke, Malaga.
