Pupils from Monifieth High School and Blairgowrie came to Tannadice yesterday for a day of Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) activities.
The day was designed to promote messages of equality and respect, allowing participants to explore their assumptions and knowledge about racism in a safe environment.
The young people took part in a morning seminar analysing the meaning of racism and the consequences of stereotyping. This was followed by a stadium tour administered by Dundee United Business Club volunteers.
First team stars Mario Bilate, Nadir Ciftci, Jarek Fojut and club captain Sean Dillon joined the young people in the afternoon to play an active role in a workshop focusing on immigration. The players helped the young people better understand the different reasons why people move from one country to another and build empathy for those who are forced to leave their home behind.
Sean Dillon said: “Dundee United fully supports the work of SRtRC. Sport is a powerful vehicle for social change. Football can, and should be a blueprint for a better society in that it brings people of different cultures, colours, and beliefs together on the field of play as equals. Mario, Nadir, Jarek and I were delighted to take part in this event. We hope that by sharing the stories of our own life journeys and backgrounds we managed to give these youngsters some new reference points to help them address certain attitudes within their own environments.”
Dee Matthew, Education Co-ordinator at Show Racism the Red Card said: “The continued support from Dundee United FC demonstrates the Club’s clear commitment to stamping out racism in football and our society.”
