Dundee United Director John Bennett and the owner of major sponsor GA Engineering, Gordon Deuchars, teamed up to present one of Paul Hegarty’s Scotland caps to the Club.
The cap, one of only three awarded to the club legend during his illustrious career, was donated by Paul for auction at the recent Dinner held in the memory of fellow Hall of Fame inductee Frank Kopel. The auction was keenly contested with the gavel eventually struck at a fantastic £5,500, as the two local businessmen agreed to jointly purchase the item and donate the cap to the Club. The cap will now take pride of place in the boardroom at Tannadice; an outcome that’s very fitting for all involved, and emphasises the strength of the Dundee United family.
Although Paul Hegarty appeared for the national side on eight occasions, players are only awarded a cap for every year they played for their country, so in Paul’s case the cap donated was one of only three caps received.
Heggie is the only man involved in every one of United’s five major trophy wins, captaining the side to League Cup glory in 1979 and 1980 and leading the side to the title in 1983. He was then part of the coaching staff for both Scottish Cup wins in 1994 and 2010. The fact that he was so willing to donate such a cherished and personal item speaks volumes about Paul Hegarty as a man, whilst his football record, of course, speaks for itself
