UNITED U20S 0 - 2 CELTIC U20S

9th May 2014

Celtic may have got three points they needed to clinch the Under-20 Youth League at Tannadice but the young Tangerines made them work extremely hard for their victory. Certainly, the score flatters the visitors.

Both sides went close to scoring in the early stages. Celtic's Paul McMullan fired just over after three minutes and four minutes later Ross Gilmour headed a Chris McLaughlin free-kick narrowly over.

Celtic got the opener they craved after 17 minutes when Jamie Lindsay fired a first time effort through a ruck of players from just outside the box.

Four minutes later, United threatened an equaliser when Aidan Connolly's shot on the turn was blocked.

Twice before the interval, United were unlucky not to level.
Only a terrific one-handed save by Leonardo Fasan kept out Scott Smith's snap-shot from just inside the box after 39 minutes.

Then on the stroke of half-time, Reghan Tumilty was only inches away from making contact with McLaughlin's inviting low cross.

With Tangerines the much brighter of the two sides at the start of the second, it was against the run of play that Celtic doubled their lead just before the hour mark. The ball was played out to McMullan whose angled drive from 15 yards went in-off the far post.

Six minutes from time a wonder save by McGovern prevented Liam Henderson's 25-yarder adding a third.

Dundee United: McGovern, Montgomery, McLaughlin (Allan 68), S Smith (Coote 68), Gilmour, Harwood, B Smith (Allardyce 86), Malaga, Tumilty, Fraser, Connolly.

Substitues not used: Clarkson, H Souttar.
