Three superbly struck goals enabled the Tangerines to edge out Motherwell in a highly entertaining encounter at Airdrie this afternoon.
Motherwell were lucky not to fall behind after 15 minutes when keeper Brett Long spilled a shot from Jamie Montgomery and then blocked follow up efforts from Regan Tumilty and Euan Spark.
However, four minutes later, a fine save by United keeper Phil Anderson kept it goalless.
Two minutes on, it was United who took the lead when Montgomery cut the ball back to Scott Smith who sweetly struck a left-footed curler inside the far post from the edge of the box.
And that lead was doubled after 33 minutes with another superb strike, this time from Scott Fraser. Adam Harwood played a long ball out to the midfielder and he cut inside before picking his spot with a similar delivery to the opener.
Rarely seen as an attacking force till then, Motherwell ended the first half strongly. First Anderson brilliantly tipped over a Dale Shirkie effort four minutes before the break and, with a minute left, United were punished for failing to clear their lines with Frazer Johnstone drilling home a low drive from 20 yards.
Both sides went close to scoring before Motherwell levelled from a Shirkie penalty following a harsh handball decision after 64 minutes.
United almost regained the lead after 82 minutes through Montgomery. However, three minutes from the end, Fraser hit United's deserved winner with a cracking 25-yard drive.
