The loss of a first minute goal, shouldn't have prevented the Tannadice side from taking something from tonight's encounter because they created enough chances, especially in the second half, to have won it, never mind come away empty handed.
That early blow for the Tangerines came when Craig Halkett headed home a corner.
But United went very close to levelling after eight minutes when a great volley from Jordan Allan from Euan Spark's cross went only inches wide.
Shortly before the interval, Aidan Connolly and Scott Fraser worked their way into the box but were unable to capitalise on the opening.
The visitors' sprightly opening to the second half saw Allan and Jamie Montgomery both go close.
Continuing to press forward, a looping header from Connolly went just wide of the far post midway through the second half.
The best chance of the game fell to Brad Smith with quarter of an hour left, but his drive went past the far post.
Their efforts to somehow find the net even extended to keeper Joe McGovern going up for a corner late on, but Rangers somehow held out for the three points.
