HIBS U20S 1 - 1 UNITED U20S

25th February 2014

A gutsy performance earned the Tannadice youngsters a point in Tuesday afternoon's league meeting with Hibernian at the Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie.

Having taken a first half lead, the Tangerines weathered a second half storm and Hibs missing a late penalty to end a run of three straight defeats.

First blood almost went to the visitors with Jamie Montgomery firing just past early on.

And they went ahead after 25 minutes when Aidan Connolly's neat flick from a Chris McLaughlin free-kick looped into the net.

A mazy run by Abdellah Zoubir almost instantly brought a leveller, United keeper Phil Anderson finger-tipping his effort just over.

And only another terrific Anderson stop from the impressive Jason Cummins nine minutes from the interval preserved United's lead.

However, four minutes into the second half, poor marking at a corner enabled Tom Gardiner to connect, though Zoubir was later credited with getting the last touch.

With Hibs very much in the ascendancy at this stage, Anderson touched a low drive from Cummings on to the base of the post.

Thanks to some stubborn defending and a bit of luck, United looked as though they would hold out for point only for Euan Spark to bring down Euan Smith. The referee, who initially gave a free kick, changed his decision to a penalty after consulting with his linesman.

Fortunately for the visitors, Ryan Baptie sent the spot-kick and high of the target.

Dundee United: Anderson, Spark, McLaughlin (Timulity 75), Ballantyne, Harwood, Butcher, Connolly, S Smith, Montgomery, Fraser, B Smith.

Subs not used: McGovern, Allan, H Souttar, M Smith
