Within two minutes of kick-off, the Dundee United Under 20s were a goal up courtesy of a back pass from a Kilmarnock defender which was dwelled on by their keeper. Ryan Dow was pressuring the keeper and managed to snatch and tap the ball into an empty goal from six yards. Almost straight from the restart Kilmarnock won a corner; their defender rose the highest and headered down well into the back of the net.
The next goal came from a sublime Scott Fraser pass which sent Dow clear inside the box. The Kilmarnock goalkeeper came rushing out to meet him and as Dow touched the ball past his opponent he was upended for a penalty kick. Dow dusted himself down to take the penalty and despatched it with aplomb, sending the keeper the wrong way to make it 2-1 to United.
United were the dominant side having many goal scoring opportunities including a header by Montgomery which went only inches wide and more chances for Ryan Dow, Scott Fraser and Brad Smith.
Ten minutes before half time United made it three. From a throw in down the left Fraser produced another magnificent pass over the top which Butcher managed to connect with and dispatch into the back of the net from three yards.

Early in the second half United had the majority of possession but were finding it harder to make their chances count. The outstanding moments of the second half saw Dow nearly complete his hat trick had it not been for a diving save from the Kilmarnock keeper who was again tested shortly after when a curling free kick from Fraser was looking to nestle its way into the top corner of the net.
Towards the end of the second half Kilmarnock were trying to take the game to United. The Tangerines coped with the pressure and, although struggling to get out their own half, had a late chance or two with Brad Smith and Ryan Dow charging at the Kilmarnock rear albeit without finding the final touch.
