The young Tangerines found it hard going against their more experienced Falkirk counterparts tonight.
Whereas the United U20s had no one with first team experience, the Bairns had four overage players and that was a telling factor.
Yet, United should have opened the scoring after quarter of an hour when Euan Spark delivered an inch-perfect cross, but Scott Fraser headed over from close range.
But the home side took the lead on five minutes when a Scott Shepherd cross-cum-shot was parried by United keeper Joe McGovern with Rakish Bingham steering home the rebound.
With the home side on top, they increased their lead when the visitors failed to clear a Bingham cross properly and Ryan Blair drilled home from the edge of the box.
Following a good move, Blair was on target again with a similar finish to his first just after the hour mark.
United then rallied and substitute Ali Coote cut in from the right and cut the ball back for Aidan Connolly to fire into the roof of the net from six yards for a consolation counter.
Dundee United: McGovern, Spark, Gilmour, Ballantyne, Harwood, Hendry, Connolly, S Smith, Montgomery (M Smith 81), Fraser, McLaughlin (Coote 55).
