MOTHERWELL U20S 0 - 0 UNITED U20S

5th November 2013

With the sound of firework displays echoing all round the Excelsior Stadium, there were unfortunately few on the pitch as tonight's Under-20s clash ended goalless.

United came nearest to breaking the deadlock after 26 minutes. Scott Fraser sent Aidan Connolly on the halfway line and surged to the other end before letting fly from 20 yards only for his shot to clatter off the post.

The Steelmen's only real chance of the opening period came seven minutes later when Paul McCafferty met a Don Thomas cross from the left wing but failed to direct a free header at the back post on target.

Just before the break, a terrific Chris McLauchlin free-kick almost induced an own goal as under pressure Morgyn Neill's clearing header just cleared the bar.

That was McLaughlin's last contribution because Cammy Ballantyne replaced him at the start of the second half with Euan Spark moving to right-back and skipper Ross Gilmour took over the vacant left back position.

The visitors continued to create the better chances and seven minutes after the restart, Spark's accurate cross from the right was met by Mark Russell but didn't get enough contact on his glancing header and the ball flashed past the far post.

In response, Motherwell went close at the other end just before the hour mark when a Bob McHugh shot rebound to his strike partner Craig Moore but his effort went past the post.

Although Motherwell were now enjoying their best spell of the game, their final ball let them down.

With 15 minutes left McHugh almost won it with a crashing 25-yard volley which went inches over.
