The Under 20s suffered a 2-1 defeat to Hibs at Gayfield as three goals in eight minutes decided a tight affair.
United settled into the rhythm of the game quicker than their opponents. Scott Fraser attempted to break the Hibs defence offside trap with through balls.
Unfortunately, a sticky pitch contributed to stave off the threat. Hibs eventually began to take a foothold in the game. Press and pass was the tactic they employed and it served to allow Fraser Mullen to get forward from his right back berth.
With 22 minutes played the first goal arrived. A Mullen corner was well cleared. However, Hibs recycled possession. A direct run from Jason Cummings presented an opportunity at the edge of the box and the one-two with Danny Handling allowed Cummings to slot the ball past an unlucky Marc McCallum.
A mere four minutes later United were deservedly level. Scott Smith burst to the byline and played a tremendous cut back to Brian Graham who happily turned the ball home from ten yards. Unfortunately for the young Terrors, parity was short lived. Getting beyond Euan Spark, Mullen crossed into the area and Euan Smith, who had replaced the injured Cody Mulhall, scored what proved the winner.
In an eventful second half the highlight was Brian Graham hitting the post in the 55th minute. Hibs had the better of possession without creating clear cut opportunities. In the end it could have gone either way. However, Stevie Campbell's charges could not find the equaliser despite some good second half play.
