A debatable last minute penalty for Rangers meant honours were even at the end of a highly entertaining encounter at Tannadice tonight.
The home side got off to the best possible start with a goal in the first minute.
Rangers keeper Alan Smith parried a Mark Millar effort for a corner and from it Jamie Montgomery scrambled the ball over the line.
Only a terrific save by Smith prevented Montgomery getting a second with the keeper tipping over his well-struck 25-yarder after 13 minutes.
But Rangers were back on level terms after 11 minutes from the interval when Charlie Telfer drilled a 30-yarder into the bottom right-hand corner.
As they had done in the first half, United made a whirlwind start to the second.
Inside a minute, Scott Fraser curled a shot against the face of the bar and four minutes later Smith pulled off another terrific save to deny Montgomery's drive from the edge of the box.
At the other end, his opposite number Marc McCallum pulled off a brilliantly one-handed save from Telfer.
And the United keeper again shone just after the hour mark when he beat away Fraser Aird's snapshot from ten yards.
But with six minutes left, newly introduced Ally Coote slipped the ball into Montgomery's path and curled United in front.
However, from a contentious last minute penalty for handball, Aird levelled.
Even then Russell missed a terrific chance to grab a winner for United but fired over after being put through on goal.
