United left the Bet Butler Stadium victorious with a 3-2 victory against a very spirited and organised Dumbarton team to progress to the third round of the Scottish League Cup.
In a half almost entirely dominated by United, Dumbarton went in at the break 1-0 up following their only shot on target when Kevin Smith wrong footed the United defence to shoot low to Cierzniak's right.
Until that point United had enjoyed the bulk of the play, creating several clear cut chances. David Goodwillie headed wide after a super cross from Mark Wilson who was making his return debut whilst several chances then fell to Brian Graham following excellent work by Andy Robertson, but he was also unable to convert.
Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.United's best effort of the half came from Ryan Gauld who struck a fantastic 25-yard drive only to see it hit the bar with the keeper stranded.
United then struggled to find their feet early in the second half. With Dumbarton gaining in confidence, United could have easily been 2-0 down but for a United block on the line.
The game really took off though when Cifti, who had just been on the park for two minutes, latched on to a long through ball to coolly slot past Ewings.
United might have thought they had the game sewn up with 13 minutes to go when Gauld found a bit of space in the box through a ruck of players to put United 2-1 up. Dumbarton however made it 2-2 with three minutes to go with a beautifully curled shot into the top corner from Megginson.
With the game going from end to end, United snatched the winner when Erskine played through Cifti in the 89th minute to finish the game 3-2 winners.
