Jackie McNamara's Dundee United roared into life as the Terrors dominated Tayside rivals St Johnstone at Tannadice today.
Keith Watson opened the scoring with a superb curling strike a mere two minutes into the match. David Goodwillie doubled the advantage on 24 minutes with a looping header into Steve Banks's net - his first competitive goal since rejoining the Tangerines on loan from Blackburn Rovers.
Gary Mackay-Steven made it 3-0 before half time after he prodded the ball over the line from a tight angle. The exclamation point was added five minutes into the second half as Stuart Armstrong and Mackay-Steven combined to make it four and to give Armstrong his second goal of the Scottish Premiership campaign.
Dundee United got off to a great start and after two minutes the Terrors took the lead. Ryan Dow held the ball up 30 yards from goal and passed to Keith Watson out on the right. The full back cut inside onto his left foot and unleashed a shot which took a slight deflection and curled into the back of the net past a helpless Steve Banks.
St Johnstone responded well after the goal. However, United were always dangerous when in possession of the ball. With 24 minutes on the clock, United doubled their advantage. Watson turned provider in this instance. His forward header 35 yards out found David Goodwillie who looped a header beyond Banks from around 12 yards.
Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.United were in total control of proceedings and added a third goal 15 minutes later. Calum Butcher released Andrew Robertson on the left hand side. The full back covered 25 yards before he released a weighted through pass into the path of Gary Mackay-Steven. Banks hesitated and Mackay-Steven prodded the ball into the back of the net from an acute angle to make it 3-0 to United.
The second half could not have started any better for United. Despite St Johnstone's attempts to trouble the United back line, a slick counter attack allowed the Tangerines to add yet another goal. Mackay-Steven broke the offside trap down the right and slid the ball into the centre of the box. The pass was met by Stuart Armstrong whose right foot shot bounced into the ground and past the Saints goalkeeper to make it 4-0 for United.
United could well have made it five through substitute Nadir Ҫiftҫi with three minutes to go. Fellow substitute Ryan Gauld played a magnificent pass with the outside of his right foot just inside United's half. Ҫiftҫi broke clear of the Saints defence but, sadly for United, his shot was blocked by the legs of Banks.
