A sunny Tannadice hosted a Guinness Book of World Records attempt on Sunday as more than 1120 knitters of all ages assembled in the George Fox Stand to try and beat the current record for simultaneously knitting together.
Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.Unfortunately, the numbers were not enough to beat the current world record of 3083, but a new Scottish record was claimed. United officials also claimed, with tongues firmly in cheek, that at least the event must have set a police record for the number of offensive weapons allowed into a football stadium and declared with some confidence that, as far as they were aware, it was definitely a world record for women knitting inside Tannadice!
Lord Provost Bob Duncan, Club captain Sean Dillon and Hall of Famer Dave Bowman all took part in the event, knitting away to specially selected music, such as Needles & Pins, Woolly Bully, Cast Your Fate to the Wind, Purl's A Singer and a medley of tunes from Jim Croce and the Yarnbirds! Amanda and Frank Kopel also managed to attend.
Despite not managing to break the record, The Big Knit 2013 was viewed as a big success and a great celebration of an ancient craft.
The event also raised a substantial amount for local Alzheimer's charities.
The Club would like to thank all those who volunteered their services on the day.
