HIBERNIAN 1 - 1 UNITED

17th August 2013

Dundee United left Edinburgh with a point as Hibernian snatched an equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Easter Road. A first half goal from Stuart Armstrong was cancelled out by former United midfielder Scott Robertson's 79th minute strike.

United's first real chance of the first half fell on 17 minutes. Gary Mackay-Steven's cross from the left found David Goodwillie at the back post. With a defender between him and the goal, Goodwillie took it to the by-line and squared the ball into the path Stuart Armstrong. The Scotland Under 21 Captain would surely have scored from inside 10 yards had it not been for the intervention of former United man Scott Robertson whose tackle put the ball out for a corner.

With the Hibs side apparently lacking in confidence, the Terrors took a deserved lead. A wonderfully judged long pass from Calum Butcher released Armstrong in behind the Hibs back line. Showing strength and composure he motored into the box. Despite the Easter Road defenders' best efforts the midfielder slotted the ball past Ben Williams to give United the lead and their first Scottish Premiership goal.

In the second half United continued to have the better of possession with John Rankin and Paul Paton providing a platform for the more attacking players to build upon. A big talking point of the half came on 64 minutes. The coming together of Gavin Gunning and Kevin Thomson resulted in a confrontation between the two. With players from both sides getting involved, Referee Crawford Allan dismissed both players whilst Liam Craig earned a yellow card for his part in the confrontation.

With both teams down to ten men the game evened out slightly. The home side pressed to find an equaliser and it came on 79 minutes with former United midfielder Scott Robertson the scorer with a right foot strike from 25 yards.
