DUNDEE UNITED 4 - 1 PARTICK THISTLE

25th September 2013

A hat trick from David Goodwillie and a goal from Ryan Dow was more than enough to secure United a place in the next round of the League Cup at the expense of Partick Thistle. Elliott netted a consolation for the Jags on a great night for Jackie McNamara's side.

United fielded a strong team for the visit of Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup Third Round. Wilson and Gunning lined up in defence whilst Goodwillie and Graham started in attack alongside the in form Nadir Ciftci.

United started the game slowly with the visitors dominating the early possession. With a quarter of an hour on the clock Forbes tested Cierzniak but the United keeper saved well from close range. Five minutes later they went close again when a shot from distance from Welsh was tipped round the post by the United keeper. United began to come back into things and with around 30 minutes gone Armstrong brilliantly picked out Graham who saw his shot well saved by Fox. Two minutes later and slightly against the run of play United took the lead. Ciftci found Paton on the right and his low cross was misjudged by Balatoni and Goodwillie was on hand to slot home. Not long after Thistle went close again when Doolan held off Butcher but he fired the ball across the face of goal and out for a goal kick. On the stroke of half time United doubled their lead. Firstly Robertson passed to Ciftci who had a shot saved at the near post by Fox. Mark Wilson took the resulting corner and Goodwillie headed home for his second goal of the night.

United started the second half brightly and Goodwillie looked to immediately secure his hat trick but his long range shot went over the top. Ten minutes into the half Kerr sent a low cross into the United box, the ball was eventually cleared but it fell at the feet of Higginbottom who had a powerful shot saved by Cierzniak. With 20 left the game again sprung into life. United substitute Dow laid the ball to Armstrong who had a shot blocked by Fox, the ball came back to United's captain and he crossed to the head of Ciftci who nodded wide. Two minutes later John Baird had a chance in the box but his effort was easily taken by Cierzniak. United's young defender Robertson then sent in a brilliant cross that Goodwillie just failed to connect with. With five minutes left United sealed their victory. Goodwillie made space at the edge of the penalty area and he was unlucky when the ball came back off the post but fortunately for United Dow was on hand to turn the ball into the empty net. There was time for a consolation for the visitors when after a cross to the back post Elliott headed home. Right on the final whistle Goodwillie sealed his hat trick and man of the match performance. From a Thistle corner United broke forward with Gauld finding Armstrong who in turn found the United striker who calmly slotted the ball past Fox.
