Gavin Gunning made his competitive return but could not prevent the Tangerines' defeat to Celtic in their opening Under-20 fixture at Almondvale tonight.
The good news for United was that the Dublin born defender came through his first match in six months unscathed, playing all but the last three minutes. He was in the thick of the action at both ends, not to mention picking up a second half booking.
After 21 minutes, he blocked a Bahrudin Atajic effort and shortly afterwards had United's first serious attempt on goal, his 30-yard free kick being deflected for a corner, from which he headed over.
The visitors' goal had a narrow escape ten minutes from the break when Marc McCallum somehow managed to keep Jackson Irvine's hard driven angled effort out with his legs.
Four minutes before the interval, Celtic eventually broke the deadlock, but with a touch of fortune. Stuart Findlay fired in a shot from 25 yards which McCallum looked to have covered, but it took a deflection off Denny Johnstone to deceive the keeper.
Two minutes after the restart, Kudus Oyenuga tested Celtic keeper Leornardo Faban who held on to his effort from a narrow angle.
Shortly afterwards, Gunning and Johnstone were involved in an altercation which saw both players seeing yellow.
Nine minutes from the end Gunning drilled in a low shot from 20 yards, but Faban held on to it.
In a bit of a flurry shortly before the finish, Aiden Connelly curled one over whilst, at the other end, McCallum prevented Celtic substitute Paul McMillan doubling their lead, keeping out his effort with his legs.
