The Under-20s were narrowly defeated by their Hamilton counterparts at Douglas Park tonight. But their never-say-die attitude saw them come so close to snatching a point. For all Hamilton's possession, they created precious few chances in the first half. Indeed, their best effort came after about five minutes when Craig Watson's miscued effort hit the bar, though from the resultant corner only a goal-line clearance by Scott Fraser prevented the visitors going behind.
Yet with six minutes of the first period left, United almost sneaked ahead. Aiden Connolly sprayed a crossfield pass which Jamie Montgomery ran on to and his lob from 25 yards only had a shade too much elevation.
An indication of the pressure the Tangerines were under came when they won their first corner after 52 minutes. Having previously been restricted to long range pops at goal, Accies looked more menacing at the start of the second half and finally broke the deadlock ten minutes after the restart.
The ball broke to Andy Ryan who was unmarked right in front of goal and had no difficulty beating Joe McGovern from eight yards. To compound United's problems, they had Mark Millar red-carded on the hour mark for a high reckless challenge on Watson.
But plucky United almost levelled with 20 minutes left when Mark Russel's cross deceived home keeper Blair Currie and came back off the bar. And five minutes later, a Ross Gilmour header appeared to have crossed the line before being cleared. In the last minute, only a flying save by Currie kept out Jamie Montgomery's first time drive from the edge of the box.
