Despite energy and enthusiasm, the Under 20s lost 1-0 to St Johnstone at Tannadice tonight.
The decisive goal came after 68 minutes when a high pass forward was well taken down by Christopher Kane. The St Johnstone striker chested the ball down and slotted home on the half volley just inside the area.
Saints could have taken the lead after just two minutes when Scott Gray sent over across from the right and Dwayne Coultress somehow scooped it up and over the bar from only a yard out.
And only a finger-tip save by keeper Marc McCallum kept out a curling Liam Caddis effort with 19 minutes gone.
The home side's first effort came four minutes later, Scott Fraser's shot from the edge of the box dipping over after taking a deflection.
But a minute later, McCallum had to push a rasping 30-yard free-kick from Caddis past the post.
And as the chances kept coming, Kieran Stewart should have done better than fire his first time effort from six yard straight at the keeper after 32 minutes.
A minute later, Gavin Gunning came to the rescue diverting Craig Thomson's netbound flick past the post.
Before the break, both sides hit the woodwork - Thomson for Saints and Hilson for United.
Chances were much fewer and far between in the second half and shortly after Gunning was withdrawn, as had been pre-arranged, Saints went ahead in style.
Chris Kane collected the ball on his chest and lashed home the winner from just inside the box.
