A goal seven minutes from time denied Stevie Campbell's makeshift side a share of the spoils in their Under-20 league game at Tannadice yesterday afternoon.
With United pressing for a winner against ten-man Caley Thistle, Shane Sutherland, looking decidedly offside, headed home from close range for the winner.
If the visitors had the bulk of possession in the first half, it didn't translate into troubling home keeper Phil Anderson too much.
He was, however, beaten after 24 minutes by Kyle Whyte's glancing near post header following a corner from the left.
Indeed, Phil's only other real call to action was to keep out team mate Euan Spark's back header from a dangerous free kick.
Just before the break, the visiting keeper was tested for the first time beating away Scott Smith's free kick from 22 yards.
A half time switch in the Tangerines' formation to going with two up front saw United finally exerted some pressure.
Midway through the second period, the impressive Ryan Dow sided-footed over from six yards.
But with 15 minutes left, the home side were level.
Craig Bell was bundled over in the box by former Hibs defender Chris Hogg as he conceded a penalty for which he was red-carded.
Scott Smith duly dispatched the penalty into the back of the net.
But if the Tannadice lads hoped they would then go on and win it, their hopes were dashed by that late goal.
