Hamilton's greater experience was all too evident against Dundee United's very young side at New Douglas Park tonight.
But the visitors stuck to their task manfully enough to restrict the winning margin to a single goal. Although Accies had the better of it terms of possession in a scrappy opening period, they produced little by way of chances.
Indeed, the hosts opened the scoring with the first shot on target after 37 minutes, Eamonn Brophy finding the net with a crisp right foot shot from 12 yards.
Hamilton started the second half with much more purpose, and a Brophy snap-shot was well held by United keeper Joe McGovern nine minutes after the restart.
McGovern then beat away a 25 yard drive from substitute Gary Fraser with 63 minutes gone.
And midway through the half, the United keeper produced an even better save, tipping a Greg Docherty header past the post.
But apart from a Craig Johnston shot that was deflected just past, Accies didn't really look like adding to their score.
Yet in the very last minute, United almost equalised, Craig Bell knocking the ball just past after a goalmouth scramble.
Dundee United: McGovern, Brown, Bell, S Smith, Ballantyne, Lundie, Montgomery (Trialist 83), B Smith (Sinclair 87), Trialist, Fraser, Coote (Malcolm 79). Substitutes: Anderson, Casey.
