UNDER-20S DRAW 0 - 0 WITH ROSS COUNTY

5th March 2013

Conditions at Victoria Park were far from ideal to say the least. A heavily sanded pitch was definitely not conducive to the passing game favoured by Youth Coach Stevie Campbell.

Both sides did their best to master the difficult conditions with United having marginally more and certainly the better chances and being therefore unlucky to come away with only a point.

Although the Staggies had the bulk of possession for the opening quarter of the game, they didn't trouble keeper Phil Anderson.

By the same token, little had been seen of the Tangerines as an attacking force.

However the switch of Ryan Gauld to wide right and Robert Thomson partnering Jordan Allan up front in a 4-4-2 formation changed all that.

And after 36 minutes, United fashioned the first real chance of the game, Allan heading a Ryan Dow cross narrowly past.

It wasn't until the last kick of the first half that the home side threatened, Steffan Wolfarth's powerful effort going inches over after a surging tight-wing run.

And the German striker should have done better than weakly shoot straight at United keeper Phil Anderson after 62 minutes.

Less than a minute later, Ryan Ferguson latched on to a stray headed pass-back from Andre Hainault, and the difficult conditions were responsible for the midfielder failing to hit the target from a good position.

United went close with 18 minutes left, Luke Johnston just failing to make contact with a Gauld shot, enabling the keeper to collect comfortably.

There was also a penalty claim for a foul on Allan that went unpunished by the referee, further endorsing the feeling that United should have come away with all three points.

However, the clean sheet against what was a strong County attack was a major positive, especially with a recast defence as John Souttar was away on Scotland duty.

It was also pleasing to see Ryan Dow get a badly needed 90 minutes under his belt for the first time in over three months.

Team: Anderson, Gilmour, Johnston, Lundie, Bell, Thomson, Dow, Spark, Ferguson, Gauld, Allan.

Subs not used: McGovern (GK), M Russell, Trialist, B Smith.

The Under-20s are again in action next Tuesday, 12 March, when they face Hibs at Tannadice. Kick-off is 7pm, admission via the Jerry Kerr Stand; £3 for adults, £1 for concessions, season ticket holders watch for free.
