SCOTLAND UNDER-21S DEFEAT LUXEMBOURG 3 - 0

25th March 2013

Scotland kicked off the qualifying campaign with a well deserved win against a very well organised Luxembourg team.

Stuart Armstrong played the captain's role superbly, tirelessly covering in defence when required and driving the team forward from midfield on countless occasions. His powerful running brought a fair amount of unwanted attention with several fouls and a booking for the increasingly frustrated Luxembourg defenders.

It was pleasing to see a Scotland team comfortable on the ball and stringing passes together the way this young team did.

Despite a couple of efforts from Stuart Armstrong early on and a Toshney shot which hit the post, it looked like the first half would end goalless. However, with practically the last kick of the half, from a corner, Hearts' Jamie Walker placed a well taken strike into the top left corner of the net to give Scotland a deserved half time lead.

In the second half, Scotland continued to dominate and increased their lead from two defensive blunders. The second goal came following an indirect free kick when the Luxembourg keeper picked up a pass back. Tony Watt scored high into the net from close range. Scotland made it 3:0 with six minutes to go when Pfeiffer in the Luxembourg goal failed to hold a Fraser cross and Lewis Toshney reacted first to force the ball over the line.

There will be tougher games ahead in a group which contains Holland, Slovakia and Georgia. However, this was undoubtably an excellent start with accomplished performances from several wearing the dark blue of Scotland.
