Liam Caddis was Saints' hero hitting a hat-trick as they came from behind at Gayfield tonight to complete the double over Under-20 League leaders Dundee United.
It was Saints who almost struck early. Chris Kane caught Paddy Barrett in possession midway inside his own half and the striker ran through only to be denied by keeper Philip Anderson at the expense of a corner. And from it the United keeper came to the rescue dropping on the ball as a clearance cannoned off a defender.
But in United's first attack, Ryan Gauld delicately lobbed the ball into the far post from the right hand corner of the penalty box.
On 19 minutes, Gauld almost scored again with an overhead flick rebounding off the bar.
But in first half stoppage time Saints deservedly levelled. Anderson brought down Liam Caddis and he fired the penalty straight down the middle to beat the keeper.
And the visitors went close after 56 minutes with Anderson making a good save from Craig Thomson's effort from eight yards.
However, two goals in two minutes as Caddis completed his hat-trick sent the Tangerines reeling.
On the hour mark, he drilled a 25-yarder into the bottom left-hand corner and two minutes later, he side-stepped a defender before driving home an acute angled effort from ten yards.
In the mood Caddis tested Anderson again with 13 minutes left, but the United beat away his powerful effort from just inside the box.
However, two minutes later, the Tangerines pulled one back, Luke Johnstone heading home a Scott Smith cross from the right at the far post.
That further spurred Saints on and only a terrific double save by Anderson, first from Caddis and then Scott Gray, prevented another Saints goal.
