Dundee United couldn't overcome early goals from Michael Higdon and Chris Humphrey as Motherwell held on to their lead despite a first half reply from Jon Daly and a dominant second half performance that looked certain to yield at least a point for the Tangerines.
Motherwell took the lead as Michael Higdon made the most of a missed clearance. The second goal followed shortly after, an absolute rocket from Chris Humphrey from 25 yards following a quality Henrik Ojamaa pass.
United would get back into the game on 36 minutes as a Tom Hately slip was punished by Jon Daly slotting home from 10 yards to make it 2-1 to the visitors.
In the second half United dominated and looked sure to get an equaliser but a combination of good goalkeeping and luck on the part of Motherwell denied the Terrors.
