Table topping Dundee United just edged out Dunfermline in a closely contested Under-20 League clash at East End Park tonight.
In a first half almost devoid of goalmouth action, it was a defensive error that led to the Tangerines taking the lead after 32 minutes.
Milos Lacny, returning from a lengthy lay-off, dispossessed John Potter 30 yards out and homed in on goal drilling the ball low past Pars keeper Ryan Goodfellow.
The visitors doubled their lead on the counter just before the hour mark.
Substitute Scott Fraser, who replaced the injured Darren Petrie in the first half, ran more than half the length of the park before releasing Ryan Dow whose cut back from the byeline was swept home by Ryan Gauld.
And Gauld almost struck again seven minutes later, Goodfellow just managing to tip his shot on the turn round the post.
With 17 minutes left, the Fifers pulled one back when Luke Johnston was adjudged to have pulled Blair Henderson back and from the resultant penalty, Ross Millen reduced the leeway.
Indeed, Henderson should have levelled with ten minutes left, but directed his close range header too near Mentel. And that was the home side's best chance despite a spirited late showing.
