United actually took their lead with their first attack of note after 25 minutes.
Michael Gardyne played the ball out to Ryan Fergsuon who came through a challenge before firing the ball across goal and for Dale Hilson to knock home.
But United's lead was short lived because four minutes later, Dundee were level courtesy of striker Martin Boyle's persistence.
He chased a through ball and shrugged off a challenge to lift the ball over the advancing Phil Anderson, only for covering defender Paddy Barrett to run the ball into his own net.
However, United were back in front two minutes later with a similar build up to the opener.
Ferguson again was the provider, Ryan Gauld the scorer selling a defender a dummy before firing home from six-yards.
Seven minutes from then interval, United extended their lead when Hilson side-footed home Willie Robertson's searching cross from the right.
Less than a minute after the restart, Gardyne cut the ball back for Hilson to complete his hat-trick.
Just after the hour mark, Gauld curled in a sublime 25-yard free-kick to complete the scoring.
