ArabTRUST and the Federation of Dundee United Supporters' Clubs have made a magnificent joint donation of over £20,000 to Dundee United to kick start a new project to upgrade and resurface Gussie Park, home of the Club's youth development squads.
The improvements are required to support the Club's elite youth status programme and will involve replacement of the current surface with a 3G surface, an upgrade of the dressing room areas and the provision of sports science capability. Completion of the project will be staged over the next 12/18 months at an estimated total cost of some £200k, with both supporters' organisations working together with the Club to raise the necessary funding. In return, the Club has agreed to issue shares in exchange for all funds raised by the supporters' groups in this way.
Steven Hughes, ArabTRUST Secretary, said, "ArabTRUST is delighted to support this project as it not only satisfies our main aims of supporting the youth and community work of the Club, but will ensure that our youth development programme will continue to bring through the type of exciting young player that all fans want to see in the first team. This initial donation was made possible by an increase in ArabTRUST memberships over the summer and to a fantastic response to our merchandise and other fund raising items. We are delighted that the Federation of Dundee United Supporters' Clubs have also made a significant donation to add to our total and pleased that both groups will be working together to help our youth development squads get the facilities they deserve. We would urge all supporters to get behind this project and help us to raise funds by becoming a member of ArabTRUST and by supporting all of the various fund raising initiatives over the next year or so. All shares issued by the Club will be held on behalf of supporters, so it is important that they join up to have their say."
Scott Innes, Chairman of the Federation added, "Gussie Park has served the Club well but is long overdue for improvement. We are all well aware of the financial pressures facing clubs these days and finding funds for this sort of project, in addition to meeting existing commitments, is a challenge. Indeed, it seems that many clubs are cutting back on youth spending. However, we think that Dundee United fans want to a strong youth development programme continue at the Club and that it's very important that the facilities are, at least, in line with those seen elsewhere. We are therefore pleased to join forces with ArabTRUST on this issue and hope that all fans will support this project to the hilt."
