Dundee United today confirmed that John Rankin has extended his existing contract at the Club for a further year up to the summer of 2014.
The midfielder joined the Club from Hibernian in May 2011 and was the only outfield player to start every competitive game throughout the 2011-2012 season, playing 44 games in total.
Such was his excellent and consistent form, John was named the Player of the Year at the Club's official annual awards ceremony.
The 28 year old quickly became a fans' favourite with his non stop effort and desire to help support the attack and take a shot on goal at every opportunity. He scored 5 goals in total last year with his first goal for the Club coming in a 6-2 away win in the League Cup at Airdrie before opening his SPL account with a 25 yard strike against Celtic.
It was a delighted Peter Houston who today confirmed that John had signed his extension: "His undoubted ability allied with his fitness and work rate were always going to appeal to the fans and his experience was vital to the blend of our team last season. Such was his level of performance throughout the season that I am thrilled he has committed for a further year."
He added "This season we will look to kick on from last season's excellent finish and with another crack at Europe to look forward to, John's progress at the Club is another indication of how good it is for players' careers to come to Tannadice. This news should delight our fans who, I am sure, will once again show great support to the team."
John declared how pleased he was with how his first season had gone. "It was a great season, one I thoroughly enjoyed. The fans took to me immediately and that really helped me settle. To finish fourth and have achieved European football again shows how much quality is in this team. The incentive is there for us to now push on from last season and progress. Signing this extension was an obvious choice for me. It is important that you enjoy your football and playing for Dundee United has been so enjoyable. It is a fantastic place with a great team spirit."
