DUNDEE UNITED SIGN BRIAN McLEAN

14th June 2012

Dundee United today secured the signing of 27-year-old Brian McLean as Manager Peter Houston looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season. The player joins the Tangerines on a two-year deal.

The centre half, who can also play at full back, put pen to paper with the Club following his departure from Preston North End.

McLean came through the ranks at Rangers before he moved to Motherwell on loan during the 2005-06 season. After impressing at Fir Park, the 26-year-old signed permanently for the Steelmen and became a main stay in the SPL side's defence.

On 1st July 2009, McLean moved to Falkirk but after relegation hit the Bairns, the Club had to part company with a number of players in the summer of 2011 prompting a move south to Preston North End. He made 18 appearances for the Lilywhites last season and scored twice - against Notts County and Morcambe.

After confirmation of his release from the English Club, Manager Peter Houston moved quickly to bring the defender back north to the Club.

"Once I knew Brian was available, I moved quickly to secure him for Dundee United. He is a good defender, someone who also likes to play football and alongside the other defenders we currently have, he will become an integral part of our squad. Although he is being brought in here as a defender, he is also capable of scoring a few goals and should add to our aerial threat in the opposition penalty area. Importantly, he brings with him a wealth of experience from both north and south of the border.

"I am convinced the fans will take to Brian straight away and this signing is another step towards having the squad challenging once again at the top end of the SPL, as well as on the European front."

Brian himself was delighted to sign on at Tannadice. "I want to help the squad replicate and improve what they have achieved here in the last few years. I will look forward to the European games but it really is a privilege to join this fantastic Club. Opportunities like this do not come along too often; this is a Club that is achieving things on the park right now and I want to be part of that.

"I will knuckle down to ensure I succeed as a Dundee United player. There are good things happening here and if I can play my part in future success I will be delighted. It was disappointing that my promising start at Preston fell away with the change of Manager down there but it has presented this opening and I intend to give it 100% to achieve my goals here."

Chairman Stephen Thompson expressed his pleasure at the speed with which the Manager is conducting his summer business.

"It is important that our fans know that we are committed to continuing the success we have achieved in recent seasons. The Manager has worked very quickly this summer to add Brian, Mark Millar, Michael Gardyne and Radoslaw Cierzniak to the players who are currently at the Club. Each of these signings bring something a little bit different to what is already here and it will invigorate our support to see the squad already looking so strong.

"Satisfyingly for me, Dundee United continue to move in the right direction both on and off the park and that should please our fans also."
